Funky Boogie Grooves From The Crates
Probably the best description of boogie is “non-commercial disco”. The word popped up in 1970s funk and disco records, such as Boogie Shoes by KC & The Sunshine Band, Boogie Fever by The Sylvers, Blame It On The Boogie by The Jacksons, Boogie Nights by Heatwave, Boogie Oogie Oogie by A Taste of Honey (picture). After Disco Demolition Night on July 12 1979 people became fed up with mainstream disco and a new club oriented dance style developed, which was called “boogie” later.
Key boogie tracks were, for instance, Give Me the Night by George Benson, Boogie's Gonna Get Ya by Rafael Cameron, If You Want My Lovin’ by Evelyn King, You're the One for Me by D-Train, Don't Make Me Wait by Peech Boys, Sexual Healing by Marvin Gaye, Planet Rock by Afrika Bambaataa & Soulsonic Force and Break Dancin' – Electric Boogie by West Street Mob. Key instrument became the Roland 808, one of the earliest programmable drum machines, with which users could create their own rhythms rather than having to use preset patterns.
From the early to the mid-1980s, boogie was based around nightclubs and club DJs, due to a lack of radio and TV airplay (it was banned from MTV). Boogie is also known d as “electro funk”, “club soul”, “disco funk”, “post disco” or “underground disco”. On this cloudcast I mostly concentrate on the late 1970s and early 1980s, a period when that typical boogie sound started to move in and mainstream disco was on its way out.
A Taste Of Honey’s first recording, Boogie Oogie Oogie (produced by the fabulous Mizell Brothers), hit #1 on various international pop, disco and R&B charts. The single and self-titled album were certified double platinum in the USA (Capitol Records' first platinum single) and went gold in the United Kingdom and Japan. A Taste of Honey nabbed the ‘Best New Artist of the Year’ Grammy Award along with an additional ‘Best Vocal Performance By Group or Duo’ Grammy nomination. Janice-Marie Johnson received the ‘Best R&B Song’, Grammy nomination, as well, for writing Boogie Oogie Oogie.
